GIS Day : Wednesday, November 14, 2012 - 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm

GIS Day is a global event to educate people about how geography makes a difference in our lives through the technology of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). To celebrate GIS Day, Mapping, Analysis, and Design of the Faculty of Environment and the Geospatial Centre will be hosting activities in the EV1 courtyard and adjoining seminar room (EV1-221).

Google Map Maker Event


The Google Map Maker, held on November 21st, 22nd event was a huge success!  We had over 200 registrants, over 100 attendees (not included unregistered walk-ins),  an amazing talk by Google Waterloo and an excellent training session lead by Steve Xu.
 
As a result of this event, the University of Waterloo campus map is now very complete!

2012 University of Waterloo Campus Data

In October 2012, the Geospatial Centre received updated University of Waterloo Campus data. This resource shows detailed features of the University of Waterloo campus, for example, building footprints, roads and pathways, contours, drainage, vegetation and more. In addition, the 2012 data includes layers for the Columbia Lake Village Residences and also driveways.

Help Create a Campus Map in Google Maps!

The campus community is invited to help create complete and accurate maps of the uWaterloo campuses and beyond!

Join Geospatial Centre staff for the University of Waterloo Google Map Maker Event running on November 7 & 8 in the SLC!

This event will consist of two days of map making, and a lot of fun! This is an opportunity for anyone interested in mapping to contribute and share about the places they know and love, all through maps. The Google MapUp is a place to collaborate and exchange ideas, while adding schools, businesses, points of interest, roads, trails, and other place related things to the map. Sign up on the registration form if you are interested, then come with your mapping hats on! The more the merrier!

Please join us for the 2012 University of Waterloo Map Maker Event, and make a permanent mark on Google Maps!  Brought to you by the Geospatial Centre at the Dana Porter Library and Google Map Maker Community Team.
All participants will receive t-shirts and refreshments will be provided!

Requirements:
All uWaterloo students, faculty and staff are welcome. Participants needs a Google Account and must bring a laptop. Training will be provided.

Scholars GeoPortal

 
OCUL (Ontario Council of University Libraries) is pleased to announce the release of Scholars GeoPortal.  Scholars GeoPortal is a geospatial data discovery tool allowing Ontario’s university students and researchers to enrich their teaching and research by engaging with OCUL’s growing collection of geospatial data. The portal offers search, preview, query, download and sharing functionality for datasets licensed by Ontario university libraries, covering such topics as land use, transportation networks, census boundaries, geology, soils, points of interest (such as healthcare facilities, schools, and airports), air photos, and more.
